What to do if you receive an SMS saying your bank card is blocked? How to respond to a scam message “Your card is blocked”? Message your bank card is blocked by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation

Fraudsters have existed since time immemorial and will continue to do so forever. With the advent of bank cards, a large number of mobile scam and scam schemes have simply proliferated in this area. Recently, you can often see cases of SMS being sent that your bank card is blocked. What to do in this case and how to behave? – we’ll look into it in the article.

REQUEST! Dear readers, please write in the comments the phone number from which you received this message. This number will be added to the blacklist..

Fraud scheme

The procedure itself is quite simple. First, an SMS is sent to the bank client’s phone with the text: “Ultimate client, your bank card has been blocked by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. Info by phone: 8-800-511-26-46.” The following words can also be used:

  • freezing;
  • cancellation of the contract;
  • blocking;
  • arrest of account;
  • the card was mistakenly frozen by the central bank, the security department.

After this, the scammers will feed only on the emotionality of the bank client. Since in such cases any logical thinking is turned off. A careless citizen calls this number and is immediately answered by a pleasant voice of a girl who introduces herself as a bank employee.

Next, the girl asks for the card details to unlock the plastic card and account: Number, expiration date, owner’s name and CVC2 or CVV2 code. You don’t need to search for all this data for a long time and it is located on the banking product itself.

A few seconds later the client receives an SMS indicating that a certain amount of funds has been debited. The girl says that this is a verification transaction and the money will not be written off. This procedure is only needed to identify the card. But to complete the action, you need to name the treasured code that will be sent via SMS to your mobile phone.

Here the citizen calls this code, and the money is debited from the account. The client subsequently hears only beeps, and it is simply impossible to call this number. It is then that it dawns on the person that he has simply been “shod.”

NOTE! If you managed to name all the details, but did not tell the scammers the verification code from the SMS. It is strongly recommended that you immediately block the card after the call. You can withdraw money by bypassing 3D-Secure technology. Read about this below.

How to spot scammers

First of all, you need to pay attention that the return number is in no way connected with this bank. When the SMS banking service is activated, all notifications come from one number. For example, Sberbank has a short number 900.

But this is not an indicator either, since recently scammers have gone much further, and they have learned to fake bank numbers from virtual PBXs. So an SMS saying “Your card is blocked” can also come from a bank number.

In this case, banks generally stopped notifying clients about actual card blocking. Typically, a credit institution blocks plastic in the following cases:

  • Money was debited from the card in another country. Then the bank may suspect that the plastic was stolen and blocks it.
  • The payment system regularly collects information about suspicious retail outlets where there are cases of theft of details from plastic. And if the client uses this terminal or device to pay, the plastic card will be immediately blocked.
  • A huge amount of money has been debited from your bank account or there is a strange currency movement.
  • The card has expired.
  • The bailiffs froze and closed the account, by court decision.

They called and said that the card was blocked - are they scammers? Here you need to consider what number they are calling you from. There is a possibility that these are bank employees. In this case, you should not give any information, but simply immediately check your account in any available way.

What to do first?

First, you need to calm yourself down and make sure that the card works and no one has frozen your account. This can be done in several ways:

  1. Call and find out information on the hotline. The number is indicated on the back side of the plastic and usually starts with the numbers: 8 800. Sberbank has two numbers: 900 and 8 800 555555 0. Next, contact the operator. He may ask for the card number, but nothing more. If you hear that you are being asked to name additional plastic details, then just hang up.
  2. Log in to your personal online banking account. Next you will see a list of all your products. If the card is locked, you will see a lock indicator on its icon and it will be transparent. There will also be a message: “BLOCKED.” You can find out about all the products in the application by downloading it from Google Play or the App Store.
  3. Go to any ATM. Insert the card and try to enter the PIN code. Some devices are programmed to immediately remove the product in question. And some will simply display a message that the product is no longer available for use.
  4. Visit any bank branch with a card, passport and ask the employees of the credit institution about this problem.

If you receive an SMS message, then in 99% of cases these are scammers trying to get your money out of your account. And remember that bank employees will never ask and find out the full card details. The most they can ask is about the card number.

If you see that the card has actually been blocked, then it can only be unblocked at a bank branch in person. To do this, take your passport and go to the nearest office.

Card details

Now let's look at the consequences of losing treasured details on plastic. As already mentioned, there are only a few of them:

  • Plastic product number.
  • Validity.
  • Owner's name.
  • CV code.

Using all these details, it is quite possible to withdraw money from the card or use them in some Internet services. Unfortunately, 3D-Srecure technology does not always help. This service is connected to almost any product. The fact is that sending SMS occurs only at the initiative of a retail outlet on the Internet.

Who would like to one day find out that their bank card has been blocked and they have no access to their own money? Nobody. Such news can cause panic and force you to act recklessly. And it is during such periods of turmoil that it is easiest for scammers to deceive their victims and extract money from them. And an SMS message about blocking a card is just necessary to make a person nervous and start making mistakes.

The principle of most fraud schemes is surprisingly simple. All of them are based on hitting a person where it hurts, making him panic and stop thinking normally. And what could cause more panic than the possibility of being left without money, because the bank, for some unknown reason, suddenly blocked the card and left you without a livelihood? This is what criminals play on, convincing their victims that their cards are blocked, and they can unblock them only after a series of certain actions.

The SMS about card blocking always contains a number that you should call to sort out the problem. Those scammers who are afraid to take decisive action and get involved in fraud with bank cards usually limit themselves to just connecting a paid number, which the victim must call back. One call, and the scammer has become several thousand rubles richer, and the deceived person will have to pay a large sum to the operator for one call. But some of the criminals decide to go after bigger fish. Why do they need a measly 2-3 thousand if they can get all the victim’s money that is on her card? And this can be quite a considerable amount!

In this case, the actions of fraudsters can be carried out according to two different scenarios:

1. Find out the card data.

Upon learning that the card has been blocked, the victim is usually under the influence of passion. The perfect time to find out everything you need from her. Motivating his actions by the fact that he needs to know all the card details in order to unblock it, the fraudster receives detailed information about it. Card number, owner's name, expiration date and even CVV code. Sometimes scammers even try to find out the victim’s recent financial transactions. This will allow them to understand the person’s financial capabilities and decide how and how much money is still worth extracting from him. After receiving all the information, the “operator” confirms that the card is unlocked and the owner can safely use it. In the future, the information obtained will be used by criminals to pay for goods and services on the Internet. Basically, scammers try to immediately use the information and spend all the money from the card. What if the victim comes to his senses, understands what happened and actually blocks the card or activates protection through a phone number or password? Then the thief will have to break off. Therefore, scammers try to act immediately.

2. Transfer of money.

Not many people use the ATM money transfer feature. So the scammer hopes that his victim, especially in a state close to panic, will realize that he is voluntarily transferring money to someone unknown. The person is convinced that the only way to unblock the card is to carry out this operation himself through an ATM. Naturally, the operator will help and tell you what to do. Like a zombie, the person heads to the banking machine, repeats all the actions that the “operator” told him, and after the operation is completed, he understands what he did. But it’s too late, the money has already gone to the scammers. Some still manage to figure it out and suspend their actions.

This method of luring money is much worse than the first, since the scammer loses contact with his victim for some time while he heads to the nearest ATM. And she, having calmed down or after consulting with someone she knows, cools down and begins to suspect a catch. The fish gets off the hook. Only true masters of persuasion dare to implement this scheme. Too few people fall for it if some time passes.

What to do?

Blocking a card is an unpleasant matter. And it very rarely happens that the bank actually blocks the card. This usually happens at the request of the owner. For example, the card was lost or accidentally given to someone. It is very rare for a bank to block a card without the owner’s knowledge. To do this, you must either go into debt on the card due to the lack of funds on it and subscription fees. And if this actually happens, the bank will not ask you to call back to clarify the circumstances. He will demand to come to the department to clarify all the issues. And most often, the bank sends a written notification to the cardholder’s address, rather than a text message over the phone.

When you receive an SMS, you should carefully check which number they ask you to call back to. Each bank has several contacts for communicating with clients that begin with certain numbers. It is worth going to the website of the bank where you are served and comparing the contact information indicated on it with those specified in the message. Don't agree? Then this is a scammer.

If you still have doubts that the SMS message was sent by a bank employee and not a criminal, then you should call the bank and ask about the blocking. But according to the official number of the institution, registered on its website, and not the number specified in the SMS message. There is a 99% chance that you will be pleased that the card is valid and it has not been frozen.

There is another way to immediately sense the catch. After calling the number, the message tells you to go to the ATM and carry out a series of simple manipulations to unblock the card? It's funny, but something doesn't add up. How can I use my card at an ATM if it is blocked? Most of these devices are programmed to confiscate a card if it is listed as blocked in the database. What if she was kidnapped and scammers are trying to take advantage of her? It is for such cases that this function exists.

And if you can carry out some operations, then your card is working. You should not immediately perform the manipulations at the ATM that the operator’s voice from the handset insists on. Can you check your account? Request money for withdrawal? So how then is the card blocked?

Another thing that should alert you is why the SMS message does not contain card or bank details. After all, now most people have several cards from different banks. How then can you figure out which one was blocked? And the bank usually sends a message with a semi-hidden card number when reporting transactions carried out from the card, when SMS notifications are activated. But nothing is indicated here. The explanation is simple. In most cases, scammers do not have accurate information about the victim to whom the SMS is sent and about the card he is using. Therefore, they prefer to send impersonal information to everyone, hoping that someone will take the bait. However, too many people fall for this trick of criminals. The scale has increased so much that banks have sounded the alarm and are warning their clients about such fraud schemes.

Sometimes, with such attempts to deceive people, it gets ridiculous. It happens that SMS messages arrive late at night. What kind of bank employee works at night to send notifications to dear clients? Or the message comes from a different region, which also cannot happen. Sometimes inexperienced scammers forget to erase the name of a previous victim about whom they had accurate information.

Don't panic right away if you receive a message like this. It is better to check the card through online banking or an ATM. If it is possible to pay for something or withdraw money, then the card works. And the scammer was simply trying to fool you. And remember, never give your CVV card to anyone! This way you will allow criminals to use your money to pay for various things or services on the Internet. If the card is indeed blocked, then contact directly the bank branch from which you ordered it.

An SMS message was received from the number +7 908 393-42-21

Obviously, this can only be sent by scammers who are trying to extract as much information about your card as possible. Don't be surprised if they know your name and communicate as if they were real bank employees. You may be asked to provide all your card details, including your PIN, and to go to an ATM and make a transaction.

If you still want to call, then record your conversation (this is very easy to do on a smartphone). And before that, I recommend that you once again read the following information from Sberbank of the Russian Federation:

Unfortunately, in this case we are dealing with the actions of scammers whose target is your bank account. To gain access to it, scammers try to get as much information as possible, including all the data on your cards, PIN codes for them, a code word for conducting transactions through the Contact Center and other personal information. For this purpose, scammers can use various techniques. For example, as in this case, send an SMS with a warning, then call you and, introducing yourself as a bank employee, start asking various questions under the pretext of the need to secure your accounts or prevent any failure.

Usually scammers are very cunning and convincing, so you get the feeling that a bank employee is really calling you. Therefore, in order to avoid becoming a victim of such fraud, you need to remember a few simple rules that will help keep your funds safe.

Do not share your PIN with anyone. A bank employee will never ask you to say your PIN code out loud, so if you encounter such a request, you can be sure that this is a scam.

Do not trust SMS messages from unknown numbers. All official messages from Sberbank are sent from the short number 900 and from no other.

Keep the card out of reach of others and do not give it to others (except for cashiers when purchasing goods and services).

If your card data gets into the hands of third parties and the bank becomes aware of this, your card is automatically blocked to avoid fraudulent activities. However, the bank does not require any additional information from you to carry out these actions.

What to do if you receive an SMS saying your bank card is blocked?

It may or may not be a divorce. Call the Bank where the card was issued and find out, and if necessary, go and find out the reason for the blocking, if there was one. You will be given a comprehensive answer. Do not just send SMS anywhere if requested.

Do not respond to this SMS under any circumstances, but call your bank and explain the situation. Do not call the numbers indicated in the SMS (there may be scammers). This happened to me once, I called the bank and they answered they didn’t send me anything. Your card is working

I received this SMS. I ignored it. At that time I had two cards, one was running out of validity (or I don’t know how it was validated), and the other was valid. I doubted that it was from one of my banks, because they usually subscribe somehow. Most likely this is a scam I think.

The first step is to call the bank's hotline (there is 8-800... the number on the card is usually indicated) and find out whether the card is blocked and why (if it is blocked). Next, just delete the SMS and calmly go about your business.

I received such SMS more than once. I don't react at all. The cards are working, I check them later as soon as possible. Fraudsters, scam.

Do not call numbers in SMS. If in doubt, go to the bank you use and find out all the information there. And this scam comes via SMS.

Just an hour ago I received this SMS on my mobile phone. But since I had already heard about similar cases, I had almost no doubt that this was a scam.

The main thing here is not to panic and not rush to call and send SMS to the numbers offered.

I went into my personal account in Sberbank Online and everything is in sight. No blocking, everything is fine (but not like the beautiful marquise).

By the way, just now it occurred to me that the message did not even come to the phone that is linked to the card.

I’m connected online, I go to my page and make a transaction, let’s say I transfer some funds from a bank card to a bank account. If everything passed, then the card is working, and the card would immediately say that it is blocked! I wrote this theory, what would I do, I didn’t receive an SMS.)))

I warn those who, for some reason, are not yet in the subject.

Do not respond to such SMS under any circumstances and do not call scammers! This is a scam with the purpose of a graceful robbery. First of all, pay attention to the number from which they write and the font. When something strange is written in a message, for example, numbers instead of letters, this is a very bad sign. If you have a personal account on the bank’s website and Mobile Banking is connected, then check the balance purely for your own peace of mind. Or contact your bank to clear your doubts. I guarantee you that those who write to you when the card is not blocked want to rob you.

I received a similar message. The message also indicated a phone number.

But I didn’t call him back. The next day I just went to the nearest ATM and checked if the card worked. Everything was OK.

Fortunately, I never received such messages. The bank that issued me the salary card writes the same SMS every month. Its text states that the bank never sends SMS to clients from mobile phones and does not indicate mobile phone numbers in messages; in the case of such messages, the bank asks that in no case respond to them and report such fraud to the bank service.

You need to call the bank on the 24-hour duty phone. Our banks do this when the wrong PIN code is entered three times. If you did not try to withdraw money yourself, perhaps someone tried to do it for you and the card was blocked. In this case, you are lucky - the money should remain intact.

First of all, it is clear that this is a scam. In order to intimidate a potential victim and force him to make a call to the specified phone number. And since the phone is in another region, the conversation will cost a pretty penny! But that’s not all: the scammers’ goal is to find out their victim’s bank card details, and then - goodbye, money!

Therefore, you should not call this phone number under any circumstances! The bank has nothing to do with it either - it doesn’t need your bank card information, and it didn’t block it.

But to the phone from which such an SMS came - and it is usually different - out of spite, I sent my own SMS with content like: This song is old, and it’s about time! And then he called the subscriber service of his mobile operator and informed them that he had received a fraudulent SMS. Their security service identified the scammers' phones and took measures to block them so that no more fraudulent SMS would be sent from them.

Bank cards are the safest way to save money, but not a single card owner is protected from fraudulent activities by third parties. Recently, one scheme used by scammers has become a hot topic. “Your card is blocked” is the text of the SMS message that is sent to the number of the plastic card owner. How to protect your funds and what measures to take?

Fraudulent schemes

The essence of any money scheme is that the task of its “author” is to cause panic in the victim; it is in this state that it will be convenient for him to manipulate. Any person, when he learns that access to a bank account is closed, will agree to take any action just to remove restrictions from the account. The SMS “Your bank card is blocked” first of all prompts the owner of the plastic card to call the number back and find out all the circumstances.

First scheme

This is the first card fraud scheme. The recipient of the SMS message calls back to the sender’s number, it turns out to be a toll number, after which the operator issues an invoice to the subscriber, and the fraudster thus receives money for the call, although not much.

Never call back the number from which the SMS was sent, it is probably a toll number.

Second scheme

An SMS message is sent to the victim’s phone with the text “Your bank card is blocked by phone number XXXX.” In a state of panic, the owner calls back the specified contact and resolves the issue with the “operator”. The fraudster finds out information about the bank card, its number, expiration date, security code CVC2 or CVV2, and finally the balance. From this set of information, you can already understand that the fraudster wants to make purchases online using a bank card.

SMS from scammers: example

If you provide all the information over the phone, the funds from the card may be debited even before you hang up. It takes just seconds to complete a payment transaction online. In the future, it will be almost impossible to return the money.

Please note that telephone scammers are real professionals. You will have to provide all the information so that the “operator” can identify the client.

What to do if you receive an SMS

If you receive an SMS “Your card is blocked” or it contains a request to pay off any debt, for example, on a loan or overdraft, and transfer money to another account to remove restrictions, you should not make hasty decisions. First, you should not call back the specified number, it is better to dial the phone number of your bank’s hotline and clarify that if access to the account has really been restricted by the bank, the operator will definitely inform you about this and tell you what to do next.

Under no circumstances should you provide your PIN code, card number, or other details of your card; the bank employee will not be interested in this information. To identify the client, he will only specify the code word. By the way, scammers often don’t even know which bank you have an account with, and if they ask you about it over the phone, you can safely hang up.

If you are a Sberbank client and you received an SMS “Your card is blocked.” Sberbank sends messages only from number 900; other SMS are scams.

The most effective type of fraud is a “message from the Central Bank” with the text about blocking the card. That is, you receive a message from an unknown mobile phone from the Central Bank. Remember, the Central Bank of Russia does not provide services to individuals; its task is to regulate the work of financial institutions.

SMS from scammers: example

It is difficult to predict in advance exactly how the authors of the messages are trying to withdraw your money; in any case, they act according to a well-established scheme, so if you doubt the safety of your funds, call the bank and block the card yourself. By the way, if scammers call you on your mobile phone, turn on the recorder and record the conversation.

If fraudsters managed to withdraw any amount from your account, you should definitely write a statement to the police. The probability that the bank will return the funds to you is zero, only for the reason that the client himself made a mistake and came into contact with scammers, because banks always warn plastic card holders that they cannot disclose personal data to third parties.

So, if you received an SMS about blocking your bank card, then don’t panic. First, call the bank and find out whether it has imposed restrictions or not. Then you can block the account yourself for a while. You should not call back to unknown numbers and talk to scammers. As a last resort, write a statement to the police; law enforcement officers are obliged to respond to the statement and conduct an investigation.
