You work in the markets of Russia and the CIS (over-the-counter sector), how do you think the newly introduced regulation, mainly in Belarus and the Russian Federation, has affected advertising/PR activities in this area?

In my opinion, over the past 2 years, the advertising market for Forex brokers has been in serious stagnation. The shock stage is behind us today. However, the ban on advertising of companies unlicensed by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation on such platforms as Yandex, VKontakte, and large RuNet media outlets has had a negative impact on business as a whole.

Brokers found themselves backed into a corner. For example, small offshore companies that took clients mainly from contextual advertising in Yandex and targeting were completely at a loss. Therefore, the main reaction of brokers unlicensed in the Russian Federation is to leave the Russian market for Asia, the Middle and Far East, which look more promising and attractive. Or the desire to jump into the last carriage of the departing train by any means - experiments with aggressive advertising, “cloning” of corporate websites and landing pages without mentioning the word Forex, even to the point of austerity on employees.

If we talk about our country, I would like to note that the Ministry of Trade and Antimonopoly Regulation of Belarus is now accepting comments on the Law “On Advertising”. We have studied the new bill in detail and see no reason for alarm; standard and feasible requirements await us. I believe that the situation on the Belarusian market will not change radically. In our pool of Customers there are several Belarusian Forex brokers licensed by the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus. Conditions for promoting companies within the country are more than favorable.

Do you cooperate with the crypto industry?

To be honest, we were prompted to actively study the cryptocurrency topic by Forex brokers with whom we have been working for many years. In 2015, one of our European Customers added the now well-known Bitcoin to the pool of their trading instruments. Then we moved all non-urgent projects and literally spent days on end immersing ourselves in the mechanisms of crypto, learning to trade Bitcoin and other coins ourselves on the already familiar MetaTrader 4 terminal. Today, the interest in promoting the crypto industry is incredible, which is associated with the growing demand for crypto all over the world, and also among currency traders. In just a year or two, a powerful system of advertising channels has been formed on the Internet to promote the services of our crypto customers. We strive to establish effective contacts and obtain good conditions for advertising.

Just 2-3 negative phrases from Trump on his Twitter more than once, literally in a matter of hours, reduced the value of shares of international corporations. Of course, negative ratings and prohibitive measures by the largest advertising services could not pass without leaving a mark on advertisers. Thus, the beginning of 2018 was marked by loud statements about the ban on advertising of cryptocurrencies on social networks and search engines. In January, Facebook introduced a ban on all advertising of cryptocurrencies, ICOs and other related projects. The new crypto advertising policy affected both Instagram and Twitter. Since June, Google has also imposed a ban on crypto advertising. At the same time, Facebook withdrew its decision on June 26, and crypto advertisers again had the world’s leading social network at their disposal. Despite the lack of official messages, the Internet was flooded with complaints about Yandex.Direct, which began to massively reject advertisements for cryptocurrencies and ICOs.

Such actions were a blow to traditional advertising channels; not all companies were ready for such a turn of events.

For our Customers, we make changes to the approved promotion strategy in advance and agree on Plan B. First, as a rule, rumors appear, public conversations about intentions regarding prohibitions and restrictions. Several months or six months pass before the implementation of the bans takes place. This time is enough for advertisers to launch new channels, redistribute the budget, if not wait, but work.

Opportunities for advertising remained, despite all the bans. Companies can run their own groups, post paid content in thematic public pages, and create authorized services for collecting traffic. For Google and Yandex search results, it is justified to invest in filling the search with content for important search queries.

Let's go back to Forex brokers and talk about specific recommendations. In the context of strict regulation of the Forex market, especially the aspect of advertising, what should foreign companies do if they want to continue operating in the markets of the Russian Federation and the CIS?

Firstly, do not panic and do not rush to extremes. As our work experience shows, the broker’s lack of a clear marketing strategy only led to a drain on the advertising budget. We always begin our work to promote foreign brokers by developing a strategy and a detailed plan for all activities, with timing, forms of control and reporting. If we propose to a broker to introduce innovative solutions in marketing and PR, then we be sure to allocate a test period for these purposes with a small budget so that every dollar of the Customer can be used as efficiently as possible.

Secondly, advertise your services on available platforms, of which there are many left. Thus, the owners of many large forex sites, following the introduction of a ban on advertising of brokers unlicensed by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, hastened to change their jurisdictions and “move” to offshores. Immediately after the adoption of the law, the volume of the advertising market certainly decreased. Today there is a gradual recovery in demand from brokers when ordering promotion and advertising on the Internet. Trading advertising is solved through “indirect” sales methods: forums, PR, specialized platforms, “native”, own thematic media, email marketing. I note that the demand for expert content dominates by a large margin. Brokers expect from us, as performers, not just an article that reveals the stated topic, they expect that it will be an article with an interesting new form of presentation, where a potential client, along with answers to their questions, will become a step higher as a professional.

And those brokers who maintain “silence mode” can quickly lose their market share.

This is not to say that there are no advertisements from licensed forex dealers. It exists and its volumes are relevant to the current market situation. Large players have captured the Russian market with licenses, while many additionally have their own offshore companies with more attractive conditions for traders from the Russian Federation and other countries in the CIS. Open statistics for 2017 on the total trading turnover of traders and the total number of active traders among licensed Russian brokers well reflect this dissonance. After all, on the roads, for example, Yandex.Direct or Google Adwords, the green light is always on for licensed brokers.

How do you assess the immediate prospects for the OTC industry?

Today there is a clear trend towards market legitimacy; serious regulation has appeared on the part of state and authorized bodies, as well as on the part of SROs. Where it leads? In my opinion, the market is moving from mass globalization to more dynamic local economic locations, is tied to regulation and begins to develop in a new legal field. It cannot be ruled out that restrictive measures regarding the possibilities of over-the-counter trading itself and tightening standards for the work of brokers as service providers will lead the industry in the medium term to a trading place for professionals. There will be no legal basis for the usual positioning “Forex is open to everyone”, which has been used in advertising for the last 10 years; the market in its current format will simply cease to exist.

On the other hand, today in the financial sector it is becoming increasingly difficult to get a client, not only because of advertising and other prohibitions.
